Great day hill walking in the Black Mountains
If you’re looking for a great day out hill walking, the Black Mountains in the Brecon Beacons National Park is a perfect destination. Even though the weather may not always cooperate, it can still be an incredible experience. I recently had the opportunity to explore this area on a particularly windy and rainy day, and it turned out to be an unforgettable adventure.
The Black Mountains are located in the eastern part of the Brecon Beacons National Park, and offer a range of hills and peaks for walkers of all levels. On this particular day, my group and I decided to tackle the ridge line with the Black Smiths Anvil at the summit. With some incredible views of the surrounding valleys and hills. However, with the weather as it was, we knew it would be a challenge.
The rain started as we set out from the car park, and the wind picked up as we gained elevation. Despite the weather, we were determined to reach the summit. The trail was well marked and easy to follow, but the conditions made progress slow. We had to be careful with our footing on the slippery rocks and watch out for sudden gusts of wind.
. The going was tough, but the views were worth it. The clouds that had descended over the valley gave the landscape a moody and atmospheric feel, and the occasional burst of sunlight created a magical effect.
A well-deserved lunch break was had at the Bothy on the North End of Grwyne Fawr Reservoir
The descent was much easier, with the wind at our backs and the sun shining down on us. We were grateful to be out of the worst of the weather, but we felt a sense of pride in having completed the trek in such challenging conditions. We saw few other walkers on the mountain that day, and we felt like we had the Black Mountains all to ourselves.
In conclusion, despite the wind and rain, hill walking in the Black Mountains was an amazing experience. The moody atmosphere and the sense of adventure made the challenge all the more rewarding. I would highly recommend this area to any keen hill walker looking for a real challenge and unforgettable experience. Just make sure you come prepared for whatever the weather may throw at you!
